Returns and refunds

This is a starter document and has not been reviewed by a lawyer. It must be checked against South African law (POPIA, the Consumer Protection Act and ECTA) and completed with Veld & Steel business details before the store opens for orders.

Your rights under South African law

You have rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002. Nothing on this page limits them, and any term that conflicts with them does not apply.

Changing your mind: the 7-day cooling-off right

Because you are buying online, section 44 of ECTA lets you cancel without giving a reason within 7 days of receiving the goods. You pay the cost of returning them, and we refund you within 30 days of the cancellation.

This right does not apply to everything. ECTA excludes certain transactions, including goods bought at auction, and goods made to your specification or that cannot reasonably be returned.

Faulty, unsafe or misdescribed goods

Separately, section 56 of the Consumer Protection Act gives you 6 months from delivery to return goods that are defective, unsafe, or not as described. You choose whether you want a repair, a replacement or a refund, and you are not charged for the return.

How to return something

  • Contact us with your order reference and what is wrong.
  • We confirm the return address and who pays return shipping, based on which right above applies.
  • Refunds go back to the original payment method once the return is received and checked.

Auction lots

A winning bid is a binding commitment to buy, and the 7-day cooling-off right does not apply to goods bought at auction. Your rights in respect of defective or misdescribed lots are unaffected.
